Social media claims of national power cut are fake - JPS
The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says claims circulating on social media that electricity would be shut off on Saturday due to the approaching Hurricane Melissa are fake.
“There is no such intention,” clarified Winsome Callum, Director of Corporate Communications at JPS. “The system will remain operational, for as long as it is feasible to do so.”
JPS is urging the public to rely only on its official communication channels for accurate updates, including the JPS website (jpsco.com), the JPS WhatsApp Channel, the MyJPS mobile app, and social media platforms @myjpsonline.
The utility company also warned that depending on the severity of the storm, some areas may experience outages once Melissa passes.
It says restoration efforts will begin after JPS assesses the condition of its power delivery infrastructure, prioritizing essential services, major industrial zones, and urban centres, with smaller communities and individual households addressed afterward.
“This is a time to remain calm, focused and properly informed, while we care for each other,” Callum said.
