Zero tolerance for fare hikes following Hurricane Melissa - Vaz
Minister of Transport, Daryl Vaz, has warned public passenger operators against hiking fares in areas affected by Hurricane Melissa, declaring “zero tolerance” by the police and the Transport Authority.
“One thing we’re not going to accept in this disaster is unconscionable behaviour,” he said, noting that joint sting operations will be carried out to “seize as many” offenders as possible.
He said that there have been reports of passengers being charged 50 to 100 per cent above the set fares.
Vaz added that toll booths along the North-South Highway and Highway 2000 remain free but cautioned motorists not to speed through the plazas.
He also told a press briefing Friday that road access is being opened and the National Works Agency will be carrying out these activities throughout the weekend.
