A police probe has been launched after a man were seen in a video selling numbers to passengers who line up to take the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus from Ocho Rios, St Ann to Half-Way Tree, St Andrew.

In the video, which was posted on TikTok, a man stated that persons who want to secure a seat on the bus and avoid standing can buy a number so as to get an easier ride.

He stated that he works during the morning, while another man does afternoons.

However, the JUTC, in a statement today, said such action is unauthorised.

The company said no passenger is required to pay for a number or any unofficial fee to board one of its buses.

It said the matter has been reported to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, which it said has indicated that immediate action will be taken.

“JUTC operates under strict fare collection procedures through its Electronic Fare Collection System, where passengers are only required to pay the approved fare using designated payment methods, including the SmartFare system where applicable. Any request for additional payment outside of the official fare structure is not authorized by the company,” JUTC said.

“The company takes any matter that may affect commuters or the integrity of its services very seriously,” it added.

Shantole Thompson, Corporate Communications Manager at JUTC, stated that commuters should be aware that such practices are not part of the company’s operations.

“We want to assure the public that the Jamaica Urban Transit Company does not require passengers to pay for a number or any unofficial fee to board our buses. The only payment required is the approved bus fare through our official systems. The individual seen in the circulating video is not a JUTC employee, and we strongly encourage commuters to report any such activity to the company so that appropriate action can be taken.”
