District Constable charged for allegedly opening fire on motorist in Portmore

A district constable has been charged after allegedly discharging his firearm at a motorist along the Port Henderson Main Road in Portmore, St Catherine.

Sean McKenzie is charged for breaching the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act.

Allegations are that on November 6, 2023, McKenzie opened fire at a vehicle being driven by the complainant while the motorist was overtaking traffic along the busy thoroughfare.

Following an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that McKenzie should be charged with the offence of discharge of a firearm, contrary to Section 51(1) of the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act.

According to INDECOM, t+he ODPP also recommended that disciplinary action be initiated against the constable by the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

McKenzie was brought before the St Catherine Parish Court, where he was bound over, and the matter is set for trial to begin on July 9.
