Hanover Custos Lennox Anderson-Jackson has voiced strong support for educators advocating for greater recognition of STEAM and TVET subjects, emphasising that rapid technological advancements make them increasingly vital.

Speaking at the ongoing Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) Education Conference 2026 at the Princess Grand Hotel in Hanover, Anderson-Jackson noted that the world is now shaped by swift technological change, evolving economies, and shifting workforce demands.

“STEAM and TVET are no longer optional pathways, they are essential pillars for national growth, innovation and global competitiveness,” said Anderson-Jackson.

He argued that the pressing issue is not whether Jamaica has a future, but how educators and leaders will take an active role in shaping it.

“In Hanover and across Jamaica, for instance, we must recognise that sustainable education must be inclusive, adaptive and forward-thinking. It must equip our young people not only with academic knowledge, but with practical skills, critical thinking abilities, and the resilience to navigate an ever-changing world,” he said.

Anderson-Jackson also praised teachers attending the conference, as well as educators nationwide, for their daily role in shaping students’ lives. He highlighted their dedication to building character, nurturing minds, and contributing to national development through education.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND TIMELY

Addressing the conference theme, ‘Future-proofing Education in Times of Crisis: Advancing STEAM and TVET to Sustain Innovation, Resilience and Recovery,’ he described it as both timely and thought-provoking.

“Teachers, principals and education stakeholders, your work is not easy, but it is very important,” he said. “Every day you help to shape the lives of our children, and guide them towards a better future. Because of you, dreams are formed, talents are discovered, and lives changed.”

He also commended the leadership of the JTA for its role in promoting professional development and advocacy for educators.

“I must commend the JTA for its continued leadership in fostering dialogue, professional development and advocacy on behalf of educators,” he said, adding that the organisation continues to strengthen the foundation of Jamaican society.
