A Haitian woman charged with illegal entry will learn her fate when she returns to the St Catherine Parish Court on December 1 after her case was postponed pending further input from immigration authorities.
The accused, Sophonie Guersaint-Gordon, who recently got married while on bail, appeared before Acting Senior Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gayle on Friday.
Attorney-at-law Dr Marcus Goffe informed the court that his client’s status had changed.
“Your Honour, she is now Mrs Gordon, as the two got married yesterday,” he said.
Nelson-Gayle congratulated the accused and encouraged her to “wear the ring proudly.”
Guersaint-Gordon responded by displaying her wedding ring in court.
The court was told, however, that an urgent matter had arisen which prevented personnel from the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) from attending the hearing.
Goffe also informed the court that documents had been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a stay of the proceedings pending another legal matter.
The judge advised that the case could not be concluded without input from PICA and postponed the matter to December 1 for a decision.
During the hearing, it was disclosed that Guersaint-Gordon is in an advanced stage of pregnancy and is expected to give birth by June 12.
In light of her condition, the court adjusted her bail conditions by lifting the requirement for her to report daily to the police until September 2026, approximately three months after the birth of her child.
Her $1 million bail remains in place.
Allegations are that in November 2025, Guersaint-Gordon was detained by authorities after attending a health facility in Greater Portmore, St Catherine, for medical examinations.
Investigators reportedly discovered that she was a Haitian national who had entered Jamaica illegally and later became pregnant.
