Vaz case in court…

The hearing of the election petition which Peoples National Party (PNP) candidate Abe Dabdoub has filed in the Supreme Court against Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament Daryl Vaz is set to begin today.

Mr. Dabdoub is contending that Mr. Vaz has dual citizenship and is therefore not eligible to be a member of parliament. He is claiming that Mr. Vaz is the holder of an American passport and is a citizen of that country.

Under the Jamaican constitution, a person who has sworn allegiance to a foreign country on his initiative cannot be a Member of Parliament.

Mr. Dabdoub is also contending that there were irregularities which took place in the West Portland constituency on election day.
