Contractor General uninformed

Contractor General, Greg Christie said his office has not been informed of plans to increase the threshold for the award of government contracts by the National Contracts Commission.

On Wednesday it was reported that cabinet had approved plans to increase the threshold by an unspecified amount.

According to a Ministry Paper presented during the weekly post cabinet press briefing, the measure is expected to speed up the public sector contract procurement process.

Mr. Christie has written to Prime Minister Bruce Golding outlining his concerns regarding the reports.

He says no details of the measures have been provided to the Commission of the Contractor General.

Mr. Christie wants the government to consult with the commission on the matter before the measures are formally implemented.

The Contractor General says this would ensure that adequate systems, procedures and checks and balances are in place to prevent abuse by Public Bodies and Officers.
