Timeframe extended for exemption of import duty, GCT on hurricane relief supplies
The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) is advising that the Government has extended the timeframe, to December 31, for the suspension of import duty and general consumption tax (GCT) on relief items imported in support of Jamaica’s national recovery efforts.
In a statement, the JCA said the relief measure is intended to facilitate the importation and distribution of critical relief supplies, including food, clothing, and toiletries, to assist affected individuals, families, and communities, following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
The suspension is valid from October 29 until December 31.
“Importers are reminded that items imported before October 29 will not qualify for this suspension,” the JCA said.
“During the approved relief period, importers, whether individuals or organisations, will not be required to pay import duty or GCT on these designated relief items. Please note, however, that all applicable fees and charges, including environmental levy, standard compliance fee, and customs administrative fee remain applicable.”
The JCA sought to further advise the public that the list of eligible items has also been expanded and can be viewed at its website, https://jca.gov.jm/, as well as across the agency’s official social media pages.
