Government lifts duty on energy saving mechanisms

Published:Tuesday | September 8, 2009 | 8:49 AM

The finance minister Audley Shaw says the Government is now implementing a duty-free system for all energy saving mechanisms.

Government officials have consistently complained that the cost of electricity is too high and have called for all ministries to be more energy efficient.

The Government has also indicated that it would explore Liquefied Natural Gas as a cheaper source of energy.

According to the finance minister, Jamaica is spending US$0.23 per kilowatt-hour for electricity.

It’s against this background that Mr. Shaw says he’s lifting the duties on all energy conservation mechanisms.
