UAWU and Iberostar still at odds
The University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU) is accusing the Iberostar Hotel of unfair treatment of Jamaican workers following its decision to make about 400 positions at the property redundant.
First Vice President of the UAWU, Clifton Grant said Iberostar is showing favouritism to foreign workers whom it had invited to Jamaica to take up jobs.
The UAWU and the management of the Iberostar hotel have been at odds since the hotel announced that it would be temporality closing because of a fall in occupancy.
Mr Grant is insisting that the hotel’s management has ulterior motives for its decision to carry out the redundancy exercise.
According to him, despite its announced closure Iberostar has employed new workers and is still advertising posts.
Despite several meetings at the labour ministry both parties are yet to reach an agreement.
The UAWU said it has requested another meeting with Iberostar’s management within the next seven days.
