A career day at Portland-based Buff Bay High School on Wednesday drew strong student interest, with organisers deeming the event a success as pupils engaged enthusiastically with a range of vocational and professional pathways.

Held on the school grounds, students turned out in themed uniforms reflecting their chosen careers while showing particular interest in vocational areas such as barbering, electrical installation, woodwork, and sewing, as well as in theatre and the performing arts.

Verese Williams, guidance counsellor at Buff Bay High, said students have been especially enthused by opportunities in theatre and performance, which allow them to showcase their talents before an audience.

“So whether it is speech, dance, drumming, or just plain drama (acting), students have shown a keen interest, which has allowed the school to win varied medals at the all-island championship,” she commented.

“But what is really astounding is that it is a young teacher, Nevrona Campbell, who is marshalling the theatre and performing arts with the zeal to succeed. These students are able to master the craft with the utmost ease, and they practise hard so as to reap the success,” she added.

For Campbell, who is eager to showcase her students’ abilities, theatre and the performing arts offer a viable pathway for those with both talent and interest to turn creativity into a career.

Students presented themselves in roles such as doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighters, soldiers, teachers, actors, and engineers. They were cheered on by Shamoya Atkinson, a health and family life education teacher, who also stressed the importance of oral hygiene, self-discipline, patience, and modesty.

Suline Thomas, the school’s clothing and textile teacher, noted growing interest in that subject area among students in grades nine to eleven as well as those in the lower school.

According to Thomas, careers in clothing and textiles can open opportunities worldwide in fields such as fashion design, garment manufacturing, furniture, bedding, and upholstery.

Students also showed keen interest in barbering, woodwork, and electrical installation, all of which were featured prominently during the day’s activities.
